LAS CENIZAS 2021: Awarded a 97-point score by the Gourmets Guide and an entry in the Honour Roll of the Best Wines of Spain for 2025.

It is the winery’s village wine, and it speaks loud and clear of a unique terroir: that of Cenicero, and of vineyards with more than 40 years of family history.

In the heart of Rioja Alta, nestled in the Najerilla River valley at 440 meters above sea level, lies the village of Cenicero. Here, limestone-rich soils with high clay content give life to Las Cenizas—a village wine crafted by Eduardo and Víctor from family vineyards once tended by their grandparents. It’s a heartfelt tribute to their hometown, Cenicero, whose name is believed to come from the fires once lit by shepherds passing through.

Considered one of the most iconic villages in the Rioja DOCa, Cenicero was once renowned for producing some of the region’s most prized wines. But the rise of cooperatives and the expansion of large wineries led many small-scale growers to abandon their cellars, and with them, a unique local identity was lost—blended away into generic wines. This bottle aims to bring that traditional style back to life.

Las Cenizas is made exclusively from Tempranillo grapes sourced from three vineyard plots—Puentarrón, Los Hundidos, and Sanchisnal—planted over 40 years ago by the Hernáiz family.

Aged for 17 months in barrels—60% American oak and 40% French—Las Cenizas 2021 is a wine of sweet tannins, complexity, and elegance. It reveals layered notes of spice and dark fruit, with a polished, velvety, and smooth palate. The result is a modern-style red that still pays homage to classic Rioja character.

Las Cenizas 2021 in the 2025 Guía Gourmets

In its 2025 edition, the tasting panel of the Guía Gourmets awarded Las Cenizas 2021 an outstanding 97 points, placing it at the top of the Honor Roll of Spain’s best wines:

“Deep violet cherry color. Complex and elegant, with aromas of plum, blackberry, blueberry, India ink, licorice, chocolate tart, toffee, balsamic notes, pipe tobacco, cedar, conifers, vanilla… Elegant and silky, with tension, breadth, excellent structure, and a long, aromatic finish. Rounded.”
