Las Cenizas
A wine that takes its name from one of the most important towns in the D.O.C.a Rioja region: Cenicero, in the heart of Rioja Alta, where the Hernáiz brothers come from. Cenicero means ashtray in Spanish and Cenizas means ashes. It is thought that the name derives from the ashes of the campfires left by primitive shepherds around the village.
A village famous for its vineyards and the quality of its wines.

Cenicero
It is one of the most iconic villages in the DOCa Rioja; historically its wines were among the most sought-after for their quality. However, the arrival of the cooperatives and large wineries led to the closure of the harvesters’ small “caves”, and the wines were diluted into blended wines.
The idea of elaborating a wine with grapes from those plots, which would recover the original spirit of Cenicero’s wines, was an old project of Eduardo and Víctor Hernáiz, which thus represents the closest link with their hometown: a wine recognized for its loyalty to the famous wines of Cenicero.
The vineyards of las cenizas
Terroir
Las Cenizas is made with grapes from three vineyards in Cenicero (Rioja Alta): Puentarrón, Los Hundidos and Sanchisnal, planted by the Hernáiz family in the 1980s.
They are located on the left bank of the Ebro, with good exposure to the sun and mainly calcareous clay soils, with gravel in Puentarrón and Los Hundidos, and clay and limestone. This results in a more opulent wine, with more polished and fruity tannins, unctuous but fresh.
These vineyards are mainly planted with Tempranillo, with a few hectares of Mazuelo and Viura.
