What is the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET)?

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) is the world’s largest provider of qualifications in wines, spirits and sake. Recognized by the most important beverage companies and organizations in the world, the WSET has been leader in the development and delivery of wine and spirits courses for five decades. With four progressive level courses translated into multiple languages and offered through a network of schools in more than 70 countries, the WSET qualifications inspire and train professionals and enthusiasts of these drinks.

WSET WINE QUALIFICATIONS

This qualification is for those new in wine studies. It develops the basic skills to accurately describe wine and create wine pairings, while exploring the main types and styles of wine.

What is the course about?

This qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately and make food and wine pairings.

What you'll learn

  • The main types and styles of wine.
  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics.
  • How to store and serve wine.
  • The principles of food and wine pairing.
  • How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT).

Assessment

Students are required to take a 45-minute test consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. To pass the exam, 70% of the questions must be answered correctly. If the student does not pass the exam, he/she may retake the exam at a later date.

Wset® Level 2 Award in Wines

What is the course about?

Through a combination of tasting and theory, the course enables candidates to confidently compare and describe the different styles of wine produced from internationally and regionally important grape varieties, interpret wine labels from the world’s major wine regions, provide basic guidance on proper selection and service, and understand the principles of wine tasting and evaluation.

 

It is recommended that candidates undertake a minimum of 28 hours of study, including classroom time and pre- and post-class study time.

What you'll learn

To achieve the aims of this qualification, six learning outcomes have been identified for the learner to achieve:

 

  • Understand the environmental influences and viticultural choices in the vineyard and how both affect wine style and quality.
  •  Understand how vinification and bottle ageing influence wine style and quality.
  •  Understand how environmental influences, viticultural choices, vinification and bottle ageing affect the style and quality of wines made from the main grape varieties.
  •  Know the style and quality of wines made from regionally important red and white grape varieties.
  •  Understand how the production process can influence the style of sparkling and fortified wines.
  •  Understand the basic principles and processes involved in storing and serving wine and matching wine with food.

Assessment

Candidates must pass a 50-question multiple-choice exam to achieve certification. This test takes 60 minutes and the candidate must score at least 55% correct. Incorrect answers do not count against the candidate.

 If the candidate does not pass this test, he/she may take future exams by paying the appropriate fees.

The papers and their content are sent by WSET in London and, once taken, are returned for marking and evaluation.

This course is designed for students with a basic knowledge of wine who need to acquire solid professional skills and competencies to better perform their duties. It is also an ideal course for those with a general interest in wine who wish to broaden their knowledge.

Wset® Level 3 Award in Wines

What is the course about?

This specialisation provides a thorough understanding of the factors that influence style, quality and price.  On successful completion of the course, students will be able to describe and accurately evaluate the characteristics of the world’s leading wines and use their knowledge to explain the style and quality of a wine and make informed recommendations.

 

It is recommended that the student has a minimum of 100 hours of study in addition to the classroom hours prior to the start of the course in order to be able to take the exam with sufficient guarantees.

What you'll learn

In order to achieve the objectives of this qualification, six learning outcomes have been defined, divided into two blocks, which the student must pass:

 

Theory of the wines of the world

 

  • Identify the main natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery involved in the production of the world’s still wines and explain how these factors can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
  • Identify and describe the characteristics of still wines produced in the major wine-producing regions of the world and explain how the main natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, legislation and trade can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
  • Identify and describe the characteristics of the main sparkling wines of the world and explain how the main natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, legislation and trade can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
  • Identify and describe the characteristics of the main fortified wines of the world and explain how the main natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery and legislation can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide wine information and advice to customers and staff.

 

Analytical wine tasting

 

  • To correctly and accurately describe the main characteristics of the world’s major still wines and to use this description to judge the quality and drinkability of the wine.

Assessment

To obtain certification, candidates must pass a theory exam and a tasting exam. The theoretical exam consists of 50 multiple-choice and four essay questions and lasts 2 hours. The practical exam lasts 30 minutes and consists of a blind tasting of two wines.

To achieve certification, the candidate must score a minimum of 55% in each of the multiple choice, essay and blind tasting sections of the exam.

 

If the candidate fails the entire exam or any part of it, he/she may retake the entire exam or only the failed part in future exams.

 

The papers and their content will be sent by WSET in London and, once completed, will be returned for marking and evaluation.

The WSET courses (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) are the international reference in education in the wine and spirits sector.
