Guardacumbres, the new addition to the family, is the most iconic reference so far of Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz. It is more than just an exclusive wine; it is a project for the recovery of Rioja Alta’s wine heritage. The rescue of a spectacular vineyard, wild and centenary, which was about to disappear a decade ago. The family, together with their friend and wine lover, Raúl Grijalba, decided to rescue it and turn the grapes from this incredible vineyard into a wine worthy of its unique nature. What we now have in the bottle is the result of years of trials attempting to find the best way to make this wine.

The Plot
Sierra de Cantabria to the north and Sierra de la Demanda to the south, shelter a vineyard at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level that guards its summits
Guardacumbres is an enclave with exceptional characteristics that leave their mark on this iconic wine. In the Oja-Tirón Valley, specifically in the municipality of Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level, we find this 1.7 hectare plot whose century-old vines grow without apparent order among many types of fruit tree, fig, quince, almond and hazelnut.
The different grape varieties – Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Viura – are planted randomly, as was common in the past in the vineyards of the region. The soil is clayey-calcareous with limestone outcrops on the surface. There are rocky outcrops throughout the estate, which serve as natural refuges for the native fauna of this region.
The vineyard is managed entirely with sustainable and regenerative viticulture practices.
